If ever there was a gravity riders’ XC bike, the Tallboy is it.
The new 120mm Tallboy takes a leap further into what short-travel bikes really are capable of. With kick-ass lower-link VPP suspension, a streamlined design, the typical Santa Cruz refinement, and rather radical geometry, the Tallboy is back to being a genre-bending folk hero.
Sure, 10mm more travel might only seem like one small step—but coupled with a lower link-driven VPP suspension design, this is one giant leap for the Tallboy.
It’s the kind of bike that makes you sprint while going up, along, over, or down due to the maximum efficiency of the VPP design and responsive, lightweight chassis. But, because it shares the same engineering principles as our longest travel bikes, the progressive lower link-mounted shock feels equally at home doing cross-country as it does in extreme-country. Paired with a 130mm fork, the new Tallboy becomes ever more appealing to riders who like to open it up.
And, the geometry, that's a big part of what's going on...
Established theory suggests shorter travel bikes get ridden slower, therefore require steeper and more conservative geometries. In reality though, when was the last time you ever throttled back on a fun trail because you weren’t on a bigger bike? Knowing your answer, we mimicked our longer travel geometry to create a bike with a 65.5-degree head-angle, generous front center, and short-offset fork, something rarely seen on a bike of this ilk.
And, the radical thinking doesn’t stop there. The Tallboy’s short-short 430mm chainstays have +/- 10mm of rear axle adjustment to ensure riders of all sizes and styles feel equally at home. Match that to a relatively low BB (335mm and 37.5mm drop), and you’ve got a combo that’s ready to haul into every pocket turn and launch out the other side.

Kona 6061 Aluminum
Kona 7005 and 6061 Aluminum alloys are used extensively throughout our fleet of mountain and asphalt bicycles. A tough, durable, light alloy, both Kona 7005 and 6061 deliver fantastic, reliable performance that lasts for thousands of rides. Much of our 7005/6061 tubing is butted and/or formed, meaning the tubing’s wall thickness can be increased or decreased, as well as shaped, so we can fine-tune a particular frame’s strength and ride characteristics depending on its intended application.
Internal Headset
Bearing cups are actually pressed into the frame and are easily removable. An internal headset also reduces stack height, so the height of the stem and bars are more adjustable, giving the rider the best fit possible.
Tapered Head Tube
More girth at the bottom of the head tube better distributes shock force, prolonging the bearing life of the headset itself and eliminating brake shudder, while providing confident steering performance. The inherent strength of its triangular design also means a stronger steering position and improved balance, giving the rider more control in rough terrain. A zero-stack, tapered head tube also puts strength where the load is going—into the lower headset cup—maximizing bearing durability where it’s needed.
Tubeless Compatible Rims
Tubeless rims allow for tires with more puncture resistance, the ability to run lower tire pressure, which provides better tire grip on the trail; lower rolling resistance, and weight savings over traditional tube and tire systems.
12x148mm Axle
12x142mm, 12x148, and 12x157 rear axle standards provide two major advantages to the Kona rider: the 12mm diameter of the rear axle provides the rear hub and frame with a stiff interface, while the 142/148/157mm outer diameter of the hub allows the wheel to be quickly and properly positioned in the frame before the rear axle is inserted.
Beamer Independent Suspension
Built to be off-the-top progressive, Beamer Independent Suspension helps the bike to stay higher in the travel and recover from hits more quickly. The Operators are instilled with what our product managers like to call "pure shock movement," whereby the shock is protected from side load. Designed to be highly tuneable and extremely durable, the Beamer IS is our version of greased lightning.

Part endurance racer, part rowdy trail bike…the Joplin is ridiculously fun. A luxurious endurance ride and raucous little trail bike all at once, the Joplin is a Jackie of all trades and mistress to no one. Mastery of speed and distance is the name of the game here. 29-inch wheels are proven to roll quicker than smaller sizes, with the added benefit of smoothing out the rough stuff with greater ease — just the ticket for going that little bit faster and further than you’ve gone before. The Joplin also delivers surprisingly quick acceleration and a nimble feel for a big-wheeled bike. Make no mistake, this is a punchy climber with great geometry for charging uphill. Naturally suited to cross-country ventures, the lightweight aluminum and 110mm VPP travel turn multi-day expeditions into effortless Grand Tours. Backed up by a lifetime warranty no matter how far or hard you go, the Joplin is the kind of rock-rolling royalty that never grows old.
The Joplin Aluminum D sits at the entrance to Santa Cruz' mountain bike legacy, built with quality components that belie their entry-level notions. A RockShox Recon 120mm fork leads the way with satisfying control over rocky and rooty trails, followed by a very capable Fox Float DPS shock for composure over bigger hits. WTB rims wrapped in dirt-clawing Maxxis tires help you clean sketchy sections of trail thanks to the tubeless design that allows lower tire pressure, giving you more traction when you want it most. A SRAM NX 11-speed drivetrain keeps you moving with wide-range gearing, while SRAM Level hydraulic disc brakes inspire confidence with plentiful stopping power. A Juliana Segundo saddle and Race Face bar/stem combo complete this all-around trail machine.

Active ingredients include: 29" wheels, berm-defying cornering tendencies, and a love for long rides.
The Ripmo AF (Aluminum Frame) brings the award-winning performance of the carbon Ripmo to a wider, rowdier audience. It's everything we love from the carbon Ripmo, plus a few tweaks.
IT'S METAL
Over our long tenure from mountain biking's awkward adolescence to its current anything-shreddy era, we've experimented with steel, aluminum, and titanium-remember the Bow-Ti, the first superbike? We remember the metal times, too, and it feels good to offer a premium ride experience to our broadening family of riders, courtesy of durable, affordable aluminum alloy.
MODERN GEOMETRY
With a steep, 76-degree seat tube angle and a rangy but not stratospheric reach, the Ripmo AF places riders centrally and upright over the bottom bracket. It makes for an efficient position that can go the long haul without placing too much weight on its slack, 64.9-degree headtube angle. A 44mm reduced-offset fork is more surefooted on steep descents and steadies high speeds. Better up, better down.
DW LINK
Since 2005, we've partnered with suspension guru, Dave Weagle, on the dw-link suspension platform. It provides an unparalleled combination of climbing efficiency and downhill performance, which has been proven repeatedly at the highest levels of racing.
COIL COMPATIBLE
The Ripmo AF is compatible with both coil and air shocks due to a more progressive leverage rate. It allows for coil's linearity to thrive and we spec air shocks with tunes that provide pop without feeling too harsh. On the trail, it gives the suspension a supple feel throughout the entirety of the stroke, enhancing traction no matter how deep you dig.
DVO
Now that we made the frames leverage rate progressive enough for a coil we had to find a coil shock that could handle the increased stress of being driven off of a clevis. The DVO JadeX is up to the challenge so the Ripmo AF comes with custom-tuned DVO suspension.
2.6" TIRE CLEARANCE
Ibis helped pioneer the wide rim revolution, which inspired the new crop of wider 2.4" – 2.6" tires. When paired together, this combo can be run at ultra-low pressures, which results in elbow-dragging cornering traction without sacrificing straight-line speed.
PICK YOUR SIZE
We use words like small, medium, and large to describe our sizing, because it's easy to understand, but our ultra-low standovers give you the ability to size your frame based on reach and preference.
LONG DROPPER POST
What's better than a dropper post? A longer one. Our frames are designed to accommodate the longest dropper posts possible. Riders over 5'8" (or 173cm) can easily run a 185mm dropper post, while folks between 5' and 5'8" (152cm – 172cm) can use a post 125mm or longer, depending on inseam length.
REMOVABLE ISCG05 MOUNT
Our optional ISCG 05 mount is there if you want it, removable if you don't.
